Caring for Historic Trees Across the Peak District: A Recent Project on Snake Pass

As part of our ongoing work alongside the National Trust, our team of experienced tree surgeons continues to support the management of local trees across Edale, Hope, Castleton, and Ladybower in the Peak District. These landscapes are rich in history, biodiversity, and character — and maintaining their trees is a responsibility we’re proud to share.

A Challenging Site on Snake Pass

On this occasion, we were called to one of the National Trust farms off the Snake Pass, a beautifully exposed location where the weather and terrain can be especially demanding on mature trees. The Trust’s rangers had identified a large ash tree whose expanding base had begun to push against — and eventually pull over — a section of the dry stone wall that borders the farm.

With the wall at risk and the tree positioned close to a working farming area, it was clear that action was needed to prevent further structural damage and ensure safety for people, livestock, and machinery.

Why a Heavy Reduction Was Needed

After a careful assessment, our team agreed that a heavy reduction was the most effective and sustainable approach. By reducing the canopy, we were able to lower the wind load on the tree — a crucial step in stabilising it and slowing any further impact on the wall.

Removing weight from the upper crown helps the tree cope better with strong winds, especially in exposed areas like Snake Pass. This approach also prolongs the time the tree can safely remain in the landscape, supporting local biodiversity while protecting the historic boundary wall.

Teamwork in Conservation

This project is a great example of the teamwork that underpins our partnership with the National Trust. By combining practical arboricultural expertise with the Trust’s long‑term stewardship of the land, we’re able to protect both the natural environment and the heritage features that define these working local farms.

Supporting the Hope Valley and Beyond

This is just one example of the arboricultural work we carry out across the Hope Valley and wider Peak District. From tree safety to habitat preservation, we’re committed to helping maintain the landscapes that make this area so special.

If you’d like, I can also create a shorter social‑media‑ready version, a more technical arborist-focused version, or a more story-driven version that highlights the landscape and your team’s role.
